In June 2026, Crafted Exterior Services replaced the entire roof on a two-story two-family home in Hagerstown, MD. Both units share one roof, so the crew replaced all 29 squares at once with Owens Corning Duration shingles in Sierra Gray, giving both sides of the building the same new roof system.

About the area
Hagerstown is the county seat of Washington County, Maryland. This two-story home is a two-family house, with two households living under a single roof.
Before the project

Tearing the old roof off exposed the home’s original board decking, which the crew inspected before any new materials went down.
The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: both units of this two-family home share one roof, and the tear-off exposed the original board roof decking underneath. Replacing only one side would have left a seam between old and new materials and two roofs aging at different rates.
The solution: the crew replaced all 29 squares at once, inspected the board decking across both units, and covered the whole house with one Owens Corning system so both families got the same roof and the same protection.
What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so every board and sheet could be inspected.
- Installed white PVC-coated drip edge around the entire perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment.
- Installed ice and water shield along all eaves and in every valley.
- Installed starter shingles around the full perimeter of the roof.
- Installed Owens Corning Duration shingles with SureNail Technology, hand-nailed with six nails per shingle.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashing boots and painted the pipes to match the roof.
- Installed VentSure ridge vent along the ridges.

The finished project

Why these materials
Owens Corning Duration shingles in Sierra Gray. Owens Corning rates Duration shingles Class 3 for impact resistance and builds them with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip with Triple Layer Protection in the nailing zone for stronger holding power. The shingles are algae resistant to help control dark streaking. Owens Corning lists a 130 mph wind warranty, rising to 160 mph when its required components and starter shingles on the eaves and rakes are installed (see the manufacturer warranty for details).
Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment. Owens Corning says ProArmor repels water better than 15 lb felt, resists stretching and tearing around fasteners, and has a slip-resistant surface that gives the crew safer footing on steep roofs.
Ice and water shield. A self-adhering waterproof membrane installed along the eaves and in the valleys, the two places where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.
Owens Corning VentSure ridge vent. The ridge vent works with the intake vents to move heat and moisture out of the attic. Owens Corning notes that a cool, dry attic helps protect the roof and prevent leaks from ice dams.
White PVC-coated drip edge. Metal edging along the eaves and rakes that directs water into the gutters and away from the fascia, finished in white.
Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots. Pipe penetrations are a common leak point, so every plumbing vent got a new flashing boot, and the pipes were painted to match the roof.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- On a two-family home, agree with the other household on who checks the gutters and attic, so shared parts of the roof are not overlooked.
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Walk around and look at the roof from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on, and a warm attic is what melts snow into ice dams.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.

Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles in Sierra Gray, installed over ProArmor synthetic underlayment with a VentSure ridge vent.
Crafted inspects all decking after tear-off. Boards that are damaged are repaired or replaced before the underlayment goes down, so the new shingles have a solid base.
Drip edge is metal trim along the roof edges that steers water into the gutters and away from the fascia boards. This home got white PVC-coated drip edge around the entire perimeter.
