About the area
Hagerstown is the county seat of Washington County, Maryland. This brick Cape Cod has front dormers, a brick chimney and a steep main roof.
The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: a Cape Cod with dormers has more corners and short roof planes than a simple gable roof, and each dormer wall and the brick chimney is a spot where water can get in.
The solution: the crew stripped every plane, including the dormers, and installed the new shingles around each dormer and the chimney. New 5-inch white gutter guards keep leaves from clogging the gutters below the steep roof.
What we did
- Removed the old shingles across the entire house.
- Installed new Owens Corning shingles in Colonial Slate on every roof plane, including the dormers.
- Installed 5-inch white gutter guards.
- Painted the roof pipes.
- Cleaned up the property at the end of the job.

The finished project

Why these materials
Owens Corning shingles in Colonial Slate. A gray shingle color chosen to suit the red brick.
5-inch gutter guards. Guards over the gutters keep leaves and shingle granules out, so rainwater from the steep Cape Cod roof drains instead of overflowing.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Check the gutter guards once a year and brush off any leaves sitting on top of them.
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Walk around and look at the roof from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on, and a warm attic is what melts snow into ice dams.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.
