In October 2026, Crafted Exterior Services replaced the roofs on a one-story home and its detached garage in Martinsburg, WV, in Berkeley County. Both buildings were torn off to the decking and roofed with the same Owens Corning system so they match.

Martinsburg is the county seat of Berkeley County, West Virginia, and the center of the Eastern Panhandle, where Crafted Exterior Services is based.
Before the project

The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: the home and its detached garage both needed new roofs. Doing them separately would risk mismatched shingle colors and two different roof ages.
The solution: the crew tore both buildings off to the decking and installed the same Owens Corning system on each, so the house and garage match and are covered by the same materials.
What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so every board and sheet could be inspected.
- Installed black PVC-coated drip edge around the entire perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment.
- Installed ice and water shield along all eaves and in every valley.
- Installed starter shingles around the full perimeter of the roof.
- Installed Owens Corning Duration shingles with SureNail Technology, hand-nailed with six nails per shingle.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashing boots and painted the pipes to match the roof.

The finished project

Why these materials
Owens Corning Duration shingles. Owens Corning rates Duration shingles Class 3 for impact resistance and builds them with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip with Triple Layer Protection in the nailing zone for stronger holding power. The shingles are algae resistant to help control dark streaking. Owens Corning lists a 130 mph wind warranty, rising to 160 mph when its required components and starter shingles on the eaves and rakes are installed (see the manufacturer warranty for details).
Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment. Owens Corning says ProArmor repels water better than 15 lb felt, resists stretching and tearing around fasteners, and has a slip-resistant surface that gives the crew safer footing on steep roofs.
Ice and water shield. A self-adhering waterproof membrane installed along the eaves and in the valleys, the two places where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.
Black PVC-coated drip edge. Metal edging along the eaves and rakes that directs water into the gutters and away from the fascia, finished in black.
Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots. Pipe penetrations are a common leak point, so every plumbing vent got a new flashing boot, and the pipes were painted to match the roof.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Check the garage roof too. Detached garages often get less attention, but their gutters and edges need the same care as the house.
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Walk around and look at the roof from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on, and a warm attic is what melts snow into ice dams.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.
