Finished Owens Corning Duration roof on a stone ranch home in Martinsburg, WV

In September 2026, Crafted Exterior Services replaced the roof on a large stone ranch home with an attached garage in Martinsburg, WV, in Berkeley County. At 72 squares, it is one of the larger residential roofs in this gallery, and the tear-off uncovered the home’s original board decking.

About the area

Martinsburg is the county seat of Berkeley County, West Virginia. Older homes were often built with plank-style board decking rather than the plywood or OSB sheets used today, and this stone ranch was one of them.

The challenge and how we solved it

The challenge: removing the old shingles exposed the original plank-style board roof decking. Parts of it were weathered, with gaps and worn spots, and at 72 squares this was one of the largest residential roofs in the gallery.

The solution: the crew inspected the boards across the whole roof before any new material went down, then covered the deck with synthetic underlayment and ice and water shield. Starting every job with a full tear-off is what lets problems like this be found and handled instead of being hidden under a new layer of shingles.

What we did

  1. Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so every board and sheet could be inspected.
  2. Installed black PVC-coated drip edge around the entire perimeter.
  3. Installed Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment.
  4. Installed ice and water shield along all eaves and in every valley.
  5. Installed starter shingles around the full perimeter of the roof.
  6. Installed Owens Corning Duration shingles with SureNail Technology, hand-nailed with six nails per shingle.
  7. Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashing boots and painted the pipes to match the roof.
  8. Installed VentSure ridge vent along the ridges and capped it with matching hip and ridge shingles.

Why these materials

Owens Corning Duration shingles. Owens Corning rates Duration shingles Class 3 for impact resistance and builds them with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip with Triple Layer Protection in the nailing zone for stronger holding power. The shingles are algae resistant to help control dark streaking. Owens Corning lists a 130 mph wind warranty, rising to 160 mph when its required components and starter shingles on the eaves and rakes are installed (see the manufacturer warranty for details).

Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment. Owens Corning says ProArmor repels water better than 15 lb felt, resists stretching and tearing around fasteners, and has a slip-resistant surface that gives the crew safer footing on steep roofs.

Ice and water shield. A self-adhering waterproof membrane installed along the eaves and in the valleys, the two places where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.

Owens Corning VentSure ridge vent. The ridge vent works with the intake vents to move heat and moisture out of the attic. Owens Corning notes that a cool, dry attic helps protect the roof and prevent leaks from ice dams.

Black PVC-coated drip edge. Metal edging along the eaves and rakes that directs water into the gutters and away from the fascia, finished in black.

Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots. Pipe penetrations are a common leak point, so every plumbing vent got a new flashing boot, and the pipes were painted to match the roof.

Keeping your roof in good shape

  • Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
  • Walk around and look at the roof from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
  • Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on, and a warm attic is what melts snow into ice dams.
  • Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
  • Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.

Frequently asked questions

Board decking is made of individual wood planks instead of plywood sheets, and it is found on many older homes. It can hold a new roof when the boards are sound, which is why Crafted inspects every board after tear-off.
