About the area
Robinwood is a community just outside Hagerstown in Washington County, Maryland, and is home to Hagerstown Community College.
The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: the original siding had faded and was worn at the bottom edges, especially around the rear deck and below the windows, where water and weather hit hardest. The house also has an attached two-car garage, so there was a lot of wall to cover.
The solution: the crew removed all of the old siding, checked the walls, wrapped the house in Tyvek HomeWrap and installed new vertical board and batten siding, with new fascia and soffit to finish the edges.

What we did
- Removed all of the existing siding.
- Checked the wall sheathing once the old siding was off.
- Wrapped every wall where siding was removed with DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap.
- Installed CertainTeed board and batten vertical siding.
- Wrapped all fascia in brown aluminum.
- Installed new brown vinyl soffit on all soffits.
- Cleaned up and hauled away all debris.

The finished project

Why these materials
CertainTeed Board & Batten vertical siding. CertainTeed lists this siding with a Class 1(A) fire rating, describes it as virtually maintenance free and says it never needs painting. It is covered by CertainTeed’s vinyl siding lifetime limited warranty.
DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap. A house wrap that DuPont rates as a water-resistive barrier and air barrier while still letting the wall breathe, so moisture can escape instead of being trapped behind the siding.
Brown aluminum fascia and brown vinyl soffit. The fascia wrap covers the wood trim boards so they do not need painting, and the vented soffit lets air into the attic.
Keeping your siding in good shape
- Rinse the siding once a year with a garden hose and a soft brush to remove dirt and pollen. If you use a pressure washer, keep it on a low setting and spray straight on, never up under the panels.
- Keep grills, fire pits and other heat sources well away from the walls. Vinyl can warp from close heat.
- Trim shrubs back so they do not rub against the siding or hold moisture against the wall.
- Keep gutters clear so rainwater does not spill over and run down the walls.
- Walk around the house after major wind storms and look for loose, cracked or missing panels. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts wind and storm warnings for Washington County, and a loose panel should be refastened before the next storm gets wind behind it.
- Check the caulk around windows and doors every couple of years and reseal any gaps.
