What the homeowner said
Ashley Wagaman
Working with Crafted Exterior Services was great from estimate to completion of our new roof. Wes came out for the inspection and was very thorough and informative of roofing options, and helped me to decide which type of single to go with after explaining our situation. Gabby was very helpful in getting scheduled and keeping me updated when the install date got delayed due to weather. The install team and project manager were fantastic. They kept me updated throughout the project, answered all of my questions, and ensured they cleaned up after themselves with an industrial magnet. I will definitely be coming to them with any future projects I have around the house!
About the area
Charles Town is the county seat of Jefferson County, West Virginia, a few miles southwest of Harpers Ferry in the Shenandoah Valley.
Tear-off

The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: a large two-story roof with several slopes over the house and garage, and an install date that had to move once for weather.
The solution: after Wes walked the homeowner through the shingle options, the crew tore the roof down to the decking and installed a complete CertainTeed system: RoofRunner synthetic underlayment, WinterGuard ice and water shield, starter shingles and Landmark Series shingles. The crew finished cleanup with a magnet sweep for nails.
What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so every sheet could be inspected.
- Installed white PVC-coated drip edge around the perimeter.
- Installed CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment.
- Installed CertainTeed WinterGuard ice and water shield along all eaves and in all valleys.
- Installed starter shingles around the entire perimeter.
- Installed CertainTeed Landmark Series shingles with six nails per shingle.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots and painted the pipes to match the roof.
- Cleaned up, including a magnet sweep for nails.

The finished project

Why these materials
CertainTeed Landmark Series shingles. Landmark is CertainTeed’s architectural shingle line, with a Class A fire rating. Crafted installs them with six nails per shingle.
CertainTeed RoofRunner synthetic underlayment. A synthetic underlayment that goes down over the decking as a water-resistant layer under the shingles.
CertainTeed WinterGuard. A self-adhering ice and water shield along the eaves and in the valleys, where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.
Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots. Pipe penetrations are a common leak point, so every plumbing vent got a new boot, and the pipes were painted to match.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Look the roof over from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.
