In August 2026, Crafted Exterior Services replaced the roof on a wooded A-frame cabin in Hedgesville, WV, in Berkeley County. On an A-frame the roof is also most of the walls, so the old moss-covered shingles came off from ground to ridge and the crew re-roofed both steep sides.

About the area
Hedgesville is in the wooded hills of western Berkeley County, West Virginia, toward the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area. This cabin sits on a wooded lot, and the shade from the trees is how moss took hold on the old roof.
The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: on an A-frame the roof is also most of the walls, so the steep slopes run nearly to the ground. Shade from the surrounding trees had let moss grow across the old shingles, and the roof decking under them had been patched in spots over the years.
The solution: the crew removed the old roof from ground to ridge on both sides, inspected the decking including the old patches, and re-roofed both steep sides with synthetic underlayment and new architectural shingles.

What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so every board and sheet could be inspected.
- Installed black PVC-coated drip edge around the entire perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment.
- Installed ice and water shield along all eaves and in every valley.
- Installed starter shingles around the full perimeter of the roof.
- Installed Owens Corning Duration shingles with SureNail Technology, hand-nailed with six nails per shingle.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashing boots and painted the pipes to match the roof.
- Installed VentSure ridge vent along the ridge.

The finished project

Why these materials
Owens Corning Duration shingles. Owens Corning rates Duration shingles Class 3 for impact resistance and builds them with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip with Triple Layer Protection in the nailing zone for stronger holding power. The shingles are algae resistant to help control dark streaking. Owens Corning lists a 130 mph wind warranty, rising to 160 mph when its required components and starter shingles on the eaves and rakes are installed (see the manufacturer warranty for details).
Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment. Owens Corning says ProArmor repels water better than 15 lb felt, resists stretching and tearing around fasteners, and has a slip-resistant surface that gives the crew safer footing on steep roofs.
Ice and water shield. A self-adhering waterproof membrane installed along the eaves and in the valleys, the two places where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.
Owens Corning VentSure ridge vent. The ridge vent works with the intake vents to move heat and moisture out of the attic. Owens Corning notes that a cool, dry attic helps protect the roof and prevent leaks from ice dams.
Black PVC-coated drip edge. Metal edging along the eaves and rakes that directs water into the gutters and away from the fascia, finished in black.
Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots. Pipe penetrations are a common leak point, so every plumbing vent got a new flashing boot, and the pipes were painted to match the roof.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Walk around and look at the roof from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on, and a warm attic is what melts snow into ice dams.
- Trim back branches that hang over the roof. Shade and leaf litter hold moisture, which is how moss gets started.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.
Frequently asked questions
Moss holds moisture against the shingles and can lift them over time. On this shaded Hedgesville A-frame the old roof was covered in moss, so the whole roof was replaced.
Both steep sides are torn off from the ground to the ridge, the decking is inspected, and new underlayment and shingles go on. On an A-frame the roof covers most of the walls, so it is a full-height job on both sides.
Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles, which Owens Corning makes algae resistant to help control streaking.
Trim branches back so more sun reaches the roof, keep leaves and debris off it, and keep gutters clear.
