In October 2026, Crafted Exterior Services finished replacing the shingle roof on a sprawling one-story home in Falling Waters, WV, in Berkeley County, with a 24-gauge standing seam metal roof in Almond. The home has several wings, a screened porch and a cupola, so the crew worked through it section by section.

Before the project

The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: this sprawling one-story home has several wings, a screened porch and a cupola, and the old shingle roof was being replaced with standing seam metal. Every wing, valley and transition had to be planned for metal panels.
The solution: the crew worked through the house section by section over several weeks, tearing off the old shingles, installing high-temperature ice and water shield and synthetic underlayment, then running 24-gauge standing seam panels across every wing with matching trim and ridge cap.
What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so all of it could be inspected.
- Installed high-temperature ice and water shield along all eaves and in the valleys, which metal roofs need because panels get hotter than shingles in the sun.
- Installed synthetic underlayment across the entire roof.
- Installed 24-gauge standing seam metal panels in Almond across the whole roof.
- Installed matching metal drip edge around the perimeter and metal ridge cap along the ridges.
- Inspected all flashing and replaced it where needed.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashing boots.

The finished project

Why these materials
24-gauge standing seam metal in Almond. Standing seam panels have raised seams that lock the panels together with the fasteners hidden underneath, so there are no exposed screws on the roof surface to loosen or leak.
High-temperature ice and water shield. Metal panels get hotter in the sun than shingles, so a membrane rated for high temperatures was used along the eaves and in the valleys.
Matching metal drip edge and ridge cap. The trim was finished in the same color as the panels for a clean, continuous look.
Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots. Pipe penetrations are a common leak point, so every plumbing vent got a new flashing boot.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Keep valleys and gutters clear of leaves, especially on a wooded lot, so water runs off freely.
- Look the roof over from the ground after major storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for Berkeley County.
- Avoid walking on the panels. If you must, step only where the panels are supported and wear soft-soled shoes.
- Rinse off heavy dirt or pollen with a garden hose. Skip abrasive cleaners and wire brushes, which can scratch the finish.
- Have the trim, pipe boots and any sealant checked every few years.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. On this Falling Waters home Crafted Exterior Services removed the old shingles and installed a 24-gauge standing seam metal roof in Almond over every wing.
It is a metal roof made of long panels joined by raised seams, with the fasteners hidden under the seams instead of exposed on the surface.
Metal panels get hotter than shingles in direct sun, so the membrane under them needs to be rated for higher temperatures.
