What the homeowner said
Cindy Suter
Excellent experience. Everyone I came in contact with was punctual, professional and honest. My new roof looks amazing. I would highly recommend giving them a call if you are in the market for a new roof. They also do siding and decking. They are local and I think it’s important to support out local businesses.
About the area
Gerrardstown is a small community in southern Berkeley County, West Virginia, southwest of Martinsburg along the foot of North Mountain.
Tear-off

The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: the old roof had reached the end of its life, and the homeowner wanted a full replacement done quickly and cleanly.
The solution: the crew removed the old roof down to the decking and installed a complete Owens Corning system, from drip edge and ProArmor underlayment to Duration shingles, in one day.
What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking so every sheet could be inspected.
- Installed black PVC-coated drip edge around the perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment, with ice and water shield along the eaves and in the valleys.
- Installed starter shingles around the perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning Duration shingles with six nails per shingle.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots.
- Cleaned up and hauled away all debris.

The finished project

Why these materials
Owens Corning Duration shingles. Owens Corning rates Duration shingles Class 3 for impact resistance and builds them with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip for stronger holding power. Crafted installs them with six nails per shingle. Owens Corning lists a 130 mph wind warranty, rising to 160 mph when its required components and starter shingles are installed (see the manufacturer warranty for details).
Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment. A synthetic underlayment that Owens Corning says repels water better than 15 lb felt and gives the crew safer footing on the roof.
Ice and water shield. A self-adhering waterproof membrane along the eaves and in the valleys, where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Look the roof over from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.
