They were able to schedule everything quickly and get it done and the roof/gutters and skylight look amazing. Couldn’t be more satisfied.
About the area
Harpers Ferry sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet in Jefferson County, West Virginia. Much of the area around town is wooded, and the historic lower town is part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
Before the project

The challenge and how we solved it
The challenge: once the old shingles came off, the decking along part of the roof edge had rotted, and the roof had a skylight that needed to be worked into the new roof.
The solution: the crew replaced the damaged decking, flashed around the skylight and installed a full Owens Corning roof over the house and the carport, all in one day.
What we did
- Removed the existing roofing down to the decking on the house and the carport so every sheet could be inspected.
- Replaced the rotted decking at the roof edge.
- Installed black PVC-coated drip edge around the perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment, with ice and water shield along the eaves and in the valleys.
- Installed starter shingles around the perimeter.
- Installed Owens Corning Duration shingles with six nails per shingle, working the skylight into the new roof.
- Installed Lifetime Ultimate pipe boots, painted the pipes to match, and installed a VentSure ridge vent along the ridges.

The finished project

Why these materials
Owens Corning Duration shingles. Owens Corning rates Duration shingles Class 3 for impact resistance and builds them with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip for stronger holding power. Crafted installs them with six nails per shingle. Owens Corning lists a 130 mph wind warranty, rising to 160 mph when its required components and starter shingles are installed (see the manufacturer warranty for details).
Owens Corning ProArmor synthetic underlayment. A synthetic underlayment that Owens Corning says repels water better than 15 lb felt and gives the crew safer footing on the roof.
Ice and water shield. A self-adhering waterproof membrane along the eaves and in the valleys, where ice dams and wind-driven rain are most likely to push water under shingles.
Skylight flashing. The skylight was flashed into the new underlayment and shingles so water runs around it instead of under it.
Keeping your roof in good shape
- Clean the gutters and downspouts after the leaves drop in the fall, so water drains off the eaves instead of backing up under the shingles.
- Look the roof over from the ground after major wind or hail storms. The National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office posts storm warnings for this area, and missing or creased shingles should be checked by a roofer before the next rain.
- Keep the attic vents open. Insulation pushed against the soffit vents blocks the airflow the ridge vent depends on.
- Have the pipe boots and flashing looked at every few years. Those joints are where small leaks usually start.
- Never pressure wash the shingles. It strips the protective granules off the surface.
- With trees close to the house, clear leaves off the roof and out of the valleys and around the skylight each fall.
